THE DAY WAS ROUTINE for Captain Kalista Flaker, but the order passed down to her the morning of October 3, 1998 was far from routine. This order created of her an assassin charged with performing an unthinkable act: killing her very own. The mission was simple and in the same difficult. She was to lead a team in a covert operation to South Vietnam. Their mission: Eliminate American POW's still being held captive since the Vietnam conflict. Yet the reasons behind this inhumane mission will prove to be literally out of this world as the nefarious meaning behind former President Dwight David Eisenhower's bold statement "Beware of the military's industrial complex" will be boldly revealed. Captain Flaker, this hard-nose Army Ranger of the 4th Battalion, 76th Ranger Regiment, could have never imagined what was possible within the boundaries of the nation she took an oath to defend.

Jamie and Gregory have been married for over fifteen years. Jamie, once a very successful lawyer who had tired of always working to free evil clients, had left that career and become Gregory’s proofreader, business manager and, overall, his greatest fan. Jamie and Gregory remain very much in love and have always worked hard to ensure and demonstrate their love for one another.
But now, for the first time in her life, Jamie has met a new man, a writer who in the prime of his career faces a block. Gregory sits before Buford—his cherished typewriter, bosom buddy and major supporter since he was fourteen—a gift given to him by his parents and one that he still used each time he sat down to work on his novels. Gregory had always wanted to write, felt he was destined to write and became possessed by his desire, especially when his friend, Buford, first talked to him, and his stories started to become books worthy of publication
Or perhaps, it really was the doll—the doll that had entered his married life the year before and who now was the only “pretty face” that was allowed to be in his office while he worked. For surely, as she sat there in the corner, his thoughts started to fade and he had to fight to find the right words. Does one know when he is in the throes of being possessed?
Surely, if a man is changing, the woman close to him knows it. But can she truly understand when her husband turns angry eyes on her or speaks ugly words that it is anything more than concern and frustration caused by a major block of his words? And when, one night, as they make love, and he becomes unusually aggressive, quoting lines from his books, should she have been afraid for herself—or for him? .
Then, late one evening, Gregory leaves their home, trying to find inspiration for a new novel. His visit to a bar, first, and later a prostitute helps him find the words—but at what cost? And when her husband comes home, dirty and disheveled, perhaps fondling the finger of his first victim in his pocket, and immediately enters his office and types through the night, does Jamie see the changes in his work as she later proofreads? Or, perhaps, as she then happily praises his new novels, happy he is again writing, she should be forgiven for not seeing the messages. Perhaps…
But Gregory’s attempt to reach Jamie goes unseen. Until it is too late. Until she finds she and Gregory are there, within his novels! She has become one of the most important characters ever to be in his books. For Jamie is to become a mother. And the doll, her midwife!
